I’ve done quite a bit, but have little to show for it.

In this weeks installment, our heroine has been doing a lot of math, lots of measuring, and not that much knitting. I went deep into the book Big Foot Knits and have figured out, drafted, and partially completed my sock, and I am pleased thus far. I did find myself wanting a lot more graph paper and 2 to 4 column ledger sheets than provided in the book. Fortunately I have a bit of an office supply habit, and have everything I need. I can see that I will be creating more explicit lists of how to proceed, what to do with all the numbers, how to decide what works for…

    Keeping me at it

I am finding these posts are helping me to keep focused. Yes one loves readers, and I’m not sure this one has many readers because of the sporadic past posts. It is serving its purpose. All is well. I finished my RailRoad Rib Socks. I am pleased. They will be good in my hiking boots this fall and early winter to keep those toes just a bit warmer. I am still wishing I picked a tan or brown. These will be functional, though, and I will soon forget that I am annoyed as my toes stay warm, or I will gift someone with  them. Railroad Rib socks from Fiber Trends,…

    Getting Stuff Done

This has been a great weekend for getting things finished, organized, and prioritized. It feels great. Two of the items have photos to share. The rest, though more boring, is necessary and in progress. I present to you, the newborn Batman hat. It worked out pretty well, and I think it should do pretty much what it was supposed to do. I am popping it in the mail tomorrow. 60 stitches, size 5 needles, a bit taller than necessary so that the ears don’t get pulled in, and short-row ears which are knit over 12 stitches, reducing one stitch each row. It is seamed flat at the top. I hope…

    Last you heard….

I was on my way to Yarnover. Well??!! What happened? I had 2 great classes. One from Susan Newhall on “Blended Intarsia”, the other from Amy Singer of Knitty on “Making the next Monkey” I was greatly inspired by both of them. I bought some great MadTosh from StevenBe, a bit of Habu to experiment with, and A lovely skein of fingering weight Grinning Gargoyle, in their Signature Red. Whew. That is quite enough links for any one paragraph. What happened when I got home? My class with Amy and the Grinning Gargoyle got together, and I feverishly worked on a shawlette to try and make  the Knitty Deep Fall…

So, who uses an abacus nowadays anyway?

I was set to the task of coming up with a knitter’s abacus. One of the gals at my LYS had purchased one but it snagged her knitting. She wanted one with my flush-cut jump rings. Apparently they do not snag, and folks love them. I chose to do my first prototype in shrink film. I love playing with that stuff, and it turned out very well. I added a definite geek factor to them by using the same color code used in transistors. I will be following with a bead version, and increasing the number of links to 10, per requests by those who have seen them.

    The learning curve

It has been mentioned to me that when developing patterns potentially for publications, one is advised to not post pictures, regardless of how excited one is about said pattern. Soooo. Sadly I have removed part of my previous post. I do get to post things once they publish though, so the excitement does remain, it is just postponed.

    On my Needles in March

The Chameleon Progress report, brought to you live from a very warm Spring in the upper midwest. I have made progress on two items. My Ao Shell, which now looks like a rectangle. Oh so exciting! I have started on the second half. I knit up a shop sample for work. The yarn is Yearling from Juniper Moon Farm, and the pattern is the Yearling Cardigan. The little bits to the right are ears, which I will add after blocking. There is one sad thing here. I had adjusted my tension to knit my Ao, and I forgot to adjust it back for the cardigan. It is a bit uneven,…

    Freeway Pileup

I do not know how this is for other designers, but I am suffering from a pre-published pattern pileup. I have those that are knit and awaiting drafting, those that were great inspirations but only made it 1/2 way off my needles, and those that are just really good ideas with the “when am I ever going to get around to that?” query attached. The things in my queue? Two additional versions of the comfy mitts, one for texters and one pop-up version. One additional triangle scarf, and a cool neck scarf/adornment that is sitting there languishing on the needles. Oh, and then there are the “Wheat” socks….I am still…
